Topic: The Doyle Scholarship and SRJC at a Crossroads
SRJC alumnus, Mike Von der Porten, has been researching SRJC for the past five years seeking to understand why and how the college has changed.
His findings lead to several provocative suggestions:
SRJC needs to return to its roots as an outstanding “educational institution,” getting away from its goal to “transform lives” as a “social services agency”
SRJC needs to get its financial house in order. The school has an unrestricted budget deficit of $8.1 million (year ending June 2026). The president has announced $10 million in budget cuts for the next year. Attendance is about ½ of its historic high and while recent small increases have been seen, they are not enough to solve the budget problems.
